The most beautiful sights in and around Bari
City exploration in Bari
The cityscape in Bari is extremely diverse: just south of the cruise port is the old town, which is still partially surrounded by the historic city walls. It would be ideal to start your city walk with the Basilica of San Nicola, it is a archetype of the Romanesque church from the 11th and 12th century. You will feel like you have been transported back to the Middle Ages when walking through the labyrinthine alleyways of the old town. There are still many ancient buildings.
The modern district “Murattiano” south of the old town is Quite different from the pictures and real life. As planned on the drawing board, the wide streets run strictly at right angles to each other. Here there is the commercial and commercial life in Bari, along the Sparano and Argiro. a shore excursion in Bari offers so much variety!
Matera
Approximately 49.7 miles southwest of Bari lies Matera, the capital of the “Sassi”. The term refers to prehistoric cave settlements, presumably the first human settlements in the whole of Italy.
The old town of Matera consists of houses that were built into the cave systems. You will have fascinating pictures and a great adventure when you roam the streets of these settlements. The Sassi have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993.
Trulli houses in Alberobello
If you would like to admire a completely different kind of architecture in the small town of Alberobello there is the so-called “Trulli” round houses from the 17th century, built completely without cement and therefore unique in their construction. It is about 40.3 miles southeast of Bari.
Trulli houses can be found throughout Apulia, but nowhere in concentration as in Alberobello. Therefore, the city – as well as the Sassi settlements in Matera have been under the protection of UNESCO, since 1996 as a World Heritage Site.
Lecce
As the “Florence of the South” or “Florence of the Rococo” is the noble city of Lecce referred, derived from their detailed Baroque decoration. In the immediate vicinity of the city, the necessary building material “Pietra Leccese” was mined for decades (Tufstein), which then gave Lecce the unique character of the cityscape.
You can admire this architecture on a walk across Piazza Sant Oronzo, past the Duomo, the amphitheater and the Basilica of Santa Croce. Afterwards you will have the opportunity to taste the typical Salentin Pasticciotto (pastry) or a Lecceser coffee (with almond milk and ice cubes).

Travel time
Bari is located far to the south of Italy, almost on the “heel” of the geographical boot. Nevertheless, tolerable temperatures prevail even in midsummer with a certain “basic moisture” due to the exposed location on the sea.
The season for the Adriatic Cruises starts in May. High season is of course over the summer months of July to September. Bear in mind that some destinations on an Adriatic cruise are well north of Bari (for example Venice). So it can come to a certain temperature gradient within a journey.
