Useful information for your Caribbean shore excursions
Most Caribbean shore excursions have La Romana, Barbados or Montego Bay as their start and end points. From there, MSC, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Costa Cruises and other shipping companies also call at popular ports like Ocho Rios, St. Lucia, Antigua or Grand Cayman.
The Caribbean’s most popular destinations for cruises include the Southern, Western and Eastern Caribbean. Depending on the programs, ports in Central America are also called together with some cities in the USA. Since 2017, the more relaxed conditions and regulations for cruises to Cuba have led to more offers with stays in, for example, Havana. You can explore the classic Caribbean cities or set off for an exciting shore excursion from ports in Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama or Colombia.
American shipping companies offer cruise trips in the Caribbean throughout the year. British and European shipping companies operate especially in the winter months between the beginning of November and the end of March. At this time of the year it is the dry season, during which the humidity is lower and the hurricane season is over. The year-round high temperatures of over 25 °C / 77 °F make it a great destination to escape the cold temperatures in Canada, the US and UK. Enjoy the sun in winter and bath in the warm water as well as explore the region on your own or with a guided tour.
A passport is required to enter the ports on your Caribbean cruise. This must be valid for at least 6 months, in some countries 6 months beyond the end of the journey. In Jamaica, Antigua, Dominica, St. Lucia and St. Vincent, visas are not required for short stays such as cruise stays. In Barbados and Grenada, a visa is issued upon entry so no visa application is requested in advance.
When entering the Dominican Republic you also do not need a visa, but a tourist card. The price of about 10 US dollars (approximately 7 pounds) is usually already included in the airplane ticket.
Please check with your cruise line and airline regarding the valid entry requirements for your shore excursion.
