Useful information for shore excursions in Visby (Gotland)

We have put together below information about the cruise port, the most beautiful sights as well as many useful information for shore excursions in and around Visby.

The most beautiful sights in Visby

The Hanseatic city of Visby is a popular destination for Baltic cruises. At first glance passengers fall in love with the beautiful cliffs. Once arrived at Visby’s harbour the towers of the cathedral will attract your attention immediately as they are bigger than all the other buildings.

The harbor is located near the medieval city center. Narrow streets, old buildings, nice shops, cafes and restaurants give Visby a charming, fairy-tale-like flair.

The surrounding areas of the city also make attractive excursion destinations. For example, the Bunge Museum is one of the largest open-air museums in the country. Another highlight is Fårö, a smaller neighboring island of Gotland.

Visby

Visby is the capital with 23,400 inhabitants and the port of the Swedish Baltic island Gotland. It is one of the most interesting cities in Sweden. The medieval town center is surrounded by a 2.2 mile long city wall, which has almost been completely preserved.

During some parts of the year Visby was used by the Vikings in 800 AD. From the 11th century, the island was inhabited by the Gotlanders all year round which allowed the town of Visby to grow. At the beginning of the 13th century several churches and monasteries were built. Between the 12th and 14th centuries Visby was an important point of the Hanseatic League in the Baltic Sea.

A picturesque cityscape with Romanesque and Gothic churches and the impeccable preservation of medieval storehouses as well as merchants’ houses make the northern European Hanseatic city a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Culture enthusiasts and nature enthusiasts will find many opportunities in Visby and the surrounding area.

The ring wall of Visby

A tour around the city walls with defensive towers from the Middle Ages offers a unique experience. It was built in the years 1250-1288 and extended in the 14th century. Originally it had 29 towers, today there have remained 27 of them.

Visby Cathedral

The cathedral, also called St. Mary’s Church, was built in 1225 and was the church of the German merchants. It is the only medieval church in Visby that was still under preservation. Normally, it is open to visitors during the day.

Botanical Garden

The botanical garden of Visby grows plants that only live in warmer regions, such as figs, walnut trees and tulip trees. The botanical garden is open to visitors throughout the year.

Bunge Museum

The Bunge Museum shows the 17th-and-18th-century Gotland farming culture. Furthermore, so-called Gothic picture stones from the 14th century can be visited there. These are tall stones with visual representations.

Fårö

Fårö is located northeast of Gotland. From Fårösund, Fårö can be reached by ferry in 8 minutes. There are fantastic sandy beaches. On the west coast of the island you will find the nature reserve Digirhuvud, where you can visit sea stacks (rauks). These rauks are a geological phenomenon near the coast consisting of several high limestone pillars.
