Useful information for a shore excursion in and around Koper
we have put together below information about the cruise port, the most beautiful sights and many useful information for a shore excursion in Koper.
The most beautiful sights in Koper
The Praetorian Palace is located about five minutes walk from the harbor on Tito Square in the middle of the old town. The current structure dates back to the mid-15th century, when semicircular Renaissance windows were built into the main facade and the upper part of the palace was enlarged. Today, the palace houses the city administration and a wedding hall. Nearby is also the Assumption Cathedral, from where you have a great view over the city to the sea.
The capital of Slovenia is 62 miles from Koper which is perfect for a shore excursion: the city offers countless sights such as Prešeren Square, the main square in Ljubljana. There is also the Prešeren monument, which represents the Slovenian poet Prešeren. Or you can visit the Museum of Illusions with 40 illusion rooms where you can test your perception. Stroll through the baroque old town with its many shops and restaurants or relax in the Tivoli Park and enjoy nature.
Caves of Postojna and Predjama Castle
The largest cave in Europe consists of a 13-miles-long cave system and is one of the most popular attractions in Slovenia. After a ride on the cave train, you can explore the unique caves on foot and if you are lucky you can marvel at the olm the most famous inhabitant.
Only 5.6 miles further is the castle Predjama, which is known as the world’s largest cave castle as mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records. Since the castle is connected to the rock walls and man-made walls, some rooms have both natural rock walls. In the high season a free shuttle is available to take you from the Postojna Caves to the castle.
Lake Bled is located in the Julian Alps it is definitely worth a visit: on the 3.7 mile loop around the lake, you can admire the nature at various viewpoints with breathtaking views or explore the lake by boat. On warm days you can refresh yourself in the lake and even swim to Slovenia’s only island, home to the Church of the Assumption.
Map of the cruise port in Koper
The cruise terminal of Koper is located directly at the mooring and is only a few hundred meters from the old town. The terminal is still under construction, but is absolutely sufficient in terms of capacity to cope with the comparatively low flow of visitors. In 2015, 57,893 passengers visited Koper to explore the city and visit inland attractions.

Koper is a very attractive, but rarely visited port. Entry and visa
Slovenia has been a member of the EU and the Schengen Agreement since 2004. Canadian, US citizens and UK citizens do not require a visa to enter the schengen area of countries in Europe for tourism business stays under ninety (90) days.
Please make sure, to bring a valid passport with you, which extends at least 90 days after your initial arrival in the schengen area
Please inform yourself also at your cruise company about the valid entry requirements of your cruise.
Taxi and public transport
There are buses that go to the surrounding towns and stop at various points in Koper, but the harbour is right by the old town and many attractions are within walking distance. Therefore taxis or public transport aren’t essential if you plan a shore excursion on your own. If you still need a taxi, the cost per mile on an average is 0.90 €. which is approximately 1.03$ or 0.80 pounds.
Since 2007, the euro has been the currency of Slovenia. So a currency exchange is therefore required. (1 dollar = 0.86 euro and 1 pound = 1.11 euro)
For a summer holiday you should visit Slovenia in the months of May to September. In August it is the warmest. High precipitation is to be expected in the spring, but it is relatively mild with a maximum temperature of 16 °C / 63 °F in April.
