Useful information for shore excursions in Langkawi

We have put together all useful information about the most beautiful tourist attractions, a map of the cruise port as well as other tips for your cruise excursions on Langkawi below:

The most beautiful attractions in Langkawi

Langkawi consists of a total of about 100 limestone islands off the west coast of Malaysia. The main island of the archipelago is Pulau Langkawi, on which the cruise port Langkawi is also located. Overall, only about 50,000 inhabitants live on the island, most in the main town of Kuah in the southeast of the island. The main beach is Pantai Cenang on the west coast and provides a great backdrop to relax. All islands are covered with breathtaking forests and home to a great variety of fauna, flora. The island of Langkawi is also known for the many free-living monkeys, a highlight on any holiday.

This island is famous for its scenic beauty, beautiful sandy beaches, colorful underwater worlds and relaxing atmosphere. Langkawi has been recognized by UNESCO for its landscape, karstic caves and marine fossils with a geological history dating back nearly 500 million years. On Langkawi there is a duty-free zone. No customs or taxes on food or alcohol are charged here. That’s why everything in Langkawi is much cheaper than in the rest of Malaysia. The island is affectionately called by its inhabitants as “Little Paradise” and offers many highlights and attractions that you should explore during a shore excursion or on your own.

Eagle Square

One of the most popular attractions in the capital Kuah is the Eagle Square (Dataran Lang) at the harbor with the 40-ft-high eagle statue. The eagle was built as a landmark of the island. Legend has it that Langkawi’s name comes from the two Malay words – “Helang” (eagle) and “Kawi” (red brown). Dataran Lang is located on the southeast corner of Pulau Langkawi and offers beautiful views of the bay of Kuah’s beautiful miniature fountains, bridges and terraces to linger.

Langkawi Cable Car & Skybridge on Mount Mat Cincang

In the middle of the tourist village Oriental Village in the northwest of the island you will find the valley station of the cable car Langkawi Cable Car. Opened in 2002, the cable car is 6,820 ft long and rides on Langkawi’s second highest mountain, Mount Mat Cincang (2312 ft).

The drive to the top of Mat Cincang takes about 15 minutes from the Oriental Village. As you drive, you glide over the Langkawi jungle and over the 550-million-year-old rocks. There is also the possibility to get off at the intermediate station (2140 ft) and enjoy the impressive panoramic view of the surrounding islands and the Datai Peninsula from the viewing platform.

At the mountain station at 2312 ft, there are other large viewing platforms from which you can see all the surrounding islands, to the north the southern tip of Thailand and to the southwest parts of Indonesia.

An absolute highlight is definitely the “Skybridge” high up. This unique suspension bridge is located near the Cable Car Mountain Station. The bridge hangs 328 ft above a gorge and is supported only by a single 270-ft-high mast. It has a total area of 0.12 acres, a length of 410 ft and carries up to 250 people at a time. It opened in 2005 and is one of the longest curved pedestrian bridges in the world. The walk over the bridge is definitely a unique experience and not only because of the breathtaking panorama.

Pantai Cenang beach

This is the longest and best developed tourist beach in southern Langkawi. Pantai Cenang beach is about 1.55 mi long and at some places up to 131 ft wide at low tide. Pantai Cenang has numerous hotels and resorts, many water sports centers, restaurants and bars. On the road parallel to the beach there are other localities, shops, small markets and a shopping mall.

Memorial of the Mahsuri

The mausoleum or tomb of the Mahsuri is part of the city Mahsuri and is located about 7.5 mi west of Kuah to the south of Langkawi. This tomb forms the center of the monument and is located in the garden of the complex. There are also various buildings to visit, including typical Malaysian wooden houses, a small geological museum, a few cages of native birds and a museum that houses among other things the records of the Mahsuri legend. One of the houses is supposed to be modeled on the former house of the Mahsuri – the woman around the legend.

Map of the crusie port on Langkawi

The cruise port Langkawi is located on the southernmost tip of the island and is called “Star Cruises Jetty”. The Asian shipping company Star Cruises owns the cruise terminal on Langkawi, but the cruise terminal is often used by other shipping companies for a cruise to Langkawi. Directly in the harbor building there is a taxi stand, a currency exchange and some shops for drinks and snacks.

If you book a shore excursion through us, you will of course be picked up near the respective mooring of your cruise ship at the harbor.

Things to know about shore excursions on Langkawi

Shipping companies and routes

Langkawi has always been a popular destination for Asian cruises – and a number of international shipping companies have discovered this beautiful cruise ship port in Malaysia. Meanwhile, Langkawi has joined the program on Southeast Asia routes of lines like Star cruise, Royal Caribbean and NCL.

Immigration and visa

American citizens are required to have a passport valid for at least six months to enter Malaysia. Americans do not need to obtain a Malaysia visa in advance for a pleasure or business trip if their stay in Malaysia is 90 days or less.

Nevertheless, you can pay by credit card almost everywhere. Attention: Some taxi rides do not accept payments by credit card, it is better to withdraw or exchange some Ringgit (MYR) beforehand.

Taxi and other public transports

At the cruise terminal as well as on the whole island there is hardly any public transport available.

If you have not booked a transfer or guided shore excursion, there are numerous taxis at the port in Langkawi. It is better to set the price in advance so that you do not experience any surprises afterwards. The basic price is 100 MYR for the first 4 hours. Each additional hour is charged at 20 MYR.

Travel time

Langkawi is generally characterized by a very tropical climate. If you want to avoid rain and high temperatures, the best travel time in the winter months are between January and February or in the summer months of June, July and August. During these months, the weather is best for a holiday in Malaysia. It is mostly sunny, at the same time the humidity is not that high and the average temperature is a pleasant 25 °C / 77 °F.
