Useful information for shore excursions in Phu Quoc

We have put together all useful information about the most beautiful tourist attractions, a map of the cruise port as well as other tips for your cruise excursions in Phu Quoc island below:

The most beautiful attractions in Phu Quoc

The “Pearl Island” Phu Quoc is the largest and most famous island of Vietnam and belongs to the province of Kien Giang. In the past, it was still considered the secret tip, but infrastructural extensions and construction of hotels have increased tourism immensely in recent years. The port city of Duong-Dong is known as the tourist center of the island and is also known for the popular night market which you can visit on your own. Exciting activities await you in Phu Quoc.

Dinh Cau Tempel

Directly on the beach next to the fishing port of Duong-Dong City is the colorful Dinh Cau Temple with a lighthouse on the rock. The temple is one of the island’s most popular photo motifs and is part of the Dinh-Cau rock formation. This is unofficially considered a landmark of the island. In 1937 the temple was built in honor of the sea goddess Thien Hau. Even today, the temple is still a sacred place for fishermen and sailors as they pray for protection when departing for a trip out to the sea.

The lovely area also has a terrace that you can reach over 29 steps. From here you have a great view of the beach and the fishing boats especially in the evening.

Duong-Dong Market

Doung-Dong market is the island’s largest outdoor market and offers tourists a great insight into local life. Fresh from the nearby harbor, you will find a wide variety of fish and seafood. Colorful vegetable stands, regional clothings, bags, accessories and souvenirs complete the offer. Especially for culinary delights the market offers a unique paradise.

Vinpearl Land

Your own little Disneyland – Vinpearl Land. It is a small amusement park in the northwest of the island. In addition to a large shopping street and a luxury resort, you will find numerous rides, including a ferris wheel, a water park and an underwater world.

Suoi-Tranh Waterfall

In the mountains of Ham Ninh you will find the 13-ft high Suoi Tranh waterfall. It is only a few minutes drive from Doung-Dong and a remarkable change from the hustle and bustle of the city. The waterfall is surrounded by lush greenery and offers space for picnicking, swimming or relaxing. The trails in the jungle-like forest invite you for a walk – here you can experience the flora and fauna of Vietnam and even discover a slightly higher located bat cave. In the dry season, there is hardly any water, but the natural spectacle is still worth a visit.

Ong Lang Beach

Vietnam is known for its beautiful beaches and Phu Quoc also has a lot to offer. Unfortunately, some are now overrun by tourists. Ong Lang Beach is a 2.5-mi long sandy beach, which is one of the most beautiful on the island and is also very clean and well maintained. There is even a coral reef in the bay for snorkeling and diving.

Cay Dua Prison

The former prison “Cay Dua Prison” or Coconut palm prison is now open for sightseeing and definitely worth a visit for history enthusiasts. This prison was originally used by the French and by the Americans during the Vietnam War. Up to 40,000 soldiers are said to have been captured and tortured here. These acts are also portrayed in some barracks with figures to get a real glimpse of the extremely terrible time.

Opposite the prison you will find the war memorial of Phu Quoc, built in memory of the Vietnam War. It represents three big waves, whereas the middle wave is carved in the shape of a human being.

Coi Nguon Museum

The four-story Coi Nguon Museum is located near Long Beach, which serves as a natural history and historical museum. The museum’s collection consists of more than 5,000 artifacts – fossilized wood, turtle shells, animal bones, relics of shipwrecks, historical tools – dating back to the 15th century. There is also a complete floor exhibiting only the life of today’s inhabitants on the island.

There is also a souvenir shop, restaurants, a Buddha shrine and a separate tub for making the popular Vietnamese fish sauce. The roof terrace offers a wonderful view over Doung-Dong and the coast.

Pepper farm

The island of Phu Quoc is known for its pepper – more than 1,000 tons of pepper are harvested on this island per year. In Phu Quoc there are four different types of pepper, which differ in their color: black, red, green and white. Plantation owners like to show visitors how to grow pepper and even offer fresh pepper for testing. A visit to a pepper farm is a very interesting experience. You can even buy the spice as a souvenir at the end of your visit.

Map of the crusie port in Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc has only a very small harbor, but it is under construction. At the moment, cruise ships have to anchor in front of the city of Duong Dong so they are usually lying in the roads. passengers are then brough ashore by tender boats – this trip takes approximately 15 minutes.

Things to know about shore excursions in Phu Quoc

Shipping companies and routes

So far, relatively few shipping companies call at Phu Quoc – but the island is becoming increasingly more popular, especially with cruise lines like Hapag-Lloyd Cruises with the MS Europa regularly visiting the island.

Immigration and visa

US-citizens and UK-citizens must apply for a visa before visiting Vietnam by sea. Your passport must be valid for six months beyond your planned stay, and you must have at least one blank visa page. Visit the Embassy of Vietnam website for the most current information.

Taxi and other public transports

The infrastructure on Phu Quoc, unlike other Vietnamese cities, is relatively well developed, especially with the growth of tourists in recent years. There are three different bus lines (lines 27, 28 and 29) that take you to all corners of the island.

Alternatively, you can take a taxi that is available there. Experiences have shown that most taxi drivers speak no or only broken English, but tourist information staff will often help you to communicate.

On the island there are the motorbike taxis “Xe Om” which can carry a passenger with small luggage. You usually recognize the motorcycle taxis by their spare safety helmet.

Travel time

The south of Vietnam is characterized by tropical climate. It is normally warm on Phu Quoc all-year round, the average daily temperature is between 25 to 35 °C (77 to 95 °F). The rainy season lasts from June to the end of September and is characterized by heavy rainfall.

The best travel time is therefore the dry season between November and April.
