The most beautiful attractions in Olbia
Olbia is a coastal city in northeast of Sardinia and a gateway to Costa Smeralda. This provincial port town has developed over the past few decades through airport and ferry activities into a commercial metropolis of Italy. Among other things, the harbour contributes to the busy summer months of Olbia. In the southern coastal city and its surroundings, impressive tourist attractions are waiting to be discovered during your Mediterranean cruise.
The beautiful main street Corso Umberto invites you to a leisure stroll through the city. For culture-interested passengers, the historic antique buildings and a museum here cannot be missed. For culinary enthusiasts, the famous Olbian mussels and fantastic regional wines await you.
The Old Town
Olbia is an old city with a long history. The expansion into a small port city had already began from the time of the ancient Roman Empire. Due to the natural deep harbor, Olbia quickly became a major and important port metropolis in the Mediterranean sea. With its lovingly restored streets, the pretty Old Town invites you to a stroll through the city. The shopping area consists of the main street Corso Umberto and Viale Aldo Moro. In a small, flat, one to two-storey buildings, international brands have settled in over the years. The small shops look like miniature editions.
One important thing to note is that the shops will close for a short lunch break from about 1:30 PM to 5PM so that it can stay open in the evening until midnight. Between the shops you can also find cafes and restaurants that invite you in to stay. If you have a chance, you should absolutely try the fresh mussels that are harvested directly in the bay of Olbia.
Basilica of San Simplicio
On the imposing Piazza San Simplicio near the main train station you can find Basilica of San Simplicio. It was built in the 11th century and is still used until today. The special thing about it is its simple design. It consists of three aisles and has a bell gable from the 16th century.
The archaeological museum is located near the cruise port. The exhibits on display date back to the Stone Age and show us the long history of Sardinia. There are also findings from the ancient time, the heyday of Olbia.
Castello di Pedres and the giant tomb
Appr. 10 minutes drive from Olbia, the Medieval castle of Castello di Pedres lies between the pasture and scrublands. The ascent to the castle takes about 10 minutes. From there you have a wonderful panoramic view over Olbia, the ocean and the countryside of Sardinia. The remains of the giants’ grave, a kind of mass grave can be found next to the castle among many olive trees. This was once a place for worship of the Sardinian natives.
Beaches near Olbia
Beach Pittulongu is located north from Olbia. This is considered the house beach of the city. It is divided into four parts: La Playa, Lo Squalo, Mare Rocce and Il Pellicano. This beach has fine white sand and flat sloping and the water is crytal clear. You can also enjoy the view from smalls restaurants and bars aournd here. For 20EUR you can rent 2 beach chairs and an umbrella for a whole day.
Beach Porto Istana lies to the south of Olbia. In the summer season, this place is always crowded with visitors because of its beautiful sandy white beach.

Olbia’s cruise terminal is located very central. The Old town of Olbia is only about 2km/ 1.24mi away. The harbor with its eight quays offers enough space for many ferries and cruise ships, these dock at the pier Isola Bianca. Guests can take a shuttle bus to the city center from there. The new cruise terminal has a security checkpoint, a large waiting room, a bar, a restaurant and shops. Moreover, you can also use free Wi-Fi here.

The cruise port of Olbia is a port of call of some cruise lines on their “Western Mediterranean” route. Among other things, ships from Royal Caribbean, MSC, Costa and P&O Cruises stop every year at the port of Olbia.
Immigration and visa
Sardinia is a cruise destination in the EU and Schengen area. For that reason, US citizens don’t need to apply for a visa to visit Olbia or Sardinia if their stay in Italy is under 90 days.

Taxi and other public transports
From pier Isola Bianca there are free shuttle buses every 10 minutes heading towards the center of Olbia, which is about 2 km/ 1.24 mi away.
Another way to explore the city is by open bus tour with a Hop On-Hop Off Bus. In summer, this bus departs every hour from 9AM to 5PM. At 2PM these buses will have their break und will not run. A complete tour takes about 70 minutes and costs 10 euros. Among other things, the bus also stops at Pittulongu Beach.
Near the pier there is a car rental service. It is worth exploring the surroundings of Olbia by car.
Euro is used here in Italy (1 dollar = 0,86 euro and 1 pound = 1,11 euro). You can also exchange money at exchange spots.
Olbia is a destination that you can visit all year round. In the winter months of December to February, the temperature is quite mild and varies between 10 and 15 °C / 50 and 60 °F. However, there could also be rains in this period. From March the weather is getting so warm that you can even explore the city and the surrounding areas only in a T-Shirt. A bathing trip is suitable for shore excursions from June until October. In July and August the temperature could get as hot as 35 °C / 95 °F and the water temperature is about 24 °C / 75.2 °F. Shipping companies normally offer cruise trips to the West Mediteranean all year round.
