We have put together below all worth-knowings about the cruise port, the most beautiful sights as well as many other useful tips for your shore excursions in Kefalonia
The most beautiful attractions in Kefalonia
Since most people only know the famous neighboring islands like Corfu, Crete or Rhodes, Kefalonia turns out to be a real insider tip! This island has a lot to offer, or at least just as much as the others. Not only does the capital city of Argostoli await your visit, but also countless beaches with crystal clear water. You can also explore various caves and see lovely sea turtles here.
Melissani cave
The Melissani Cave is a stalactite cave with a sparkling subterranean lake located right in the middle. This cave was discovered only after an earthquake in 1953, during which the roof of the cave collapsed. At lunchtime, most of the sunlight reaches the cave and makes the lake’s water shimmer and glitter in many shades of blue.
With a small wooden boat you can explore this magnificent place and the other surrounding caves.
Myrtos bay
The Myrtos Bay is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world that has already received some awards. It truly lives up to its name since it is surrounded by a steep wall and therefore offers a wonderful view of the turquoise water.
The area around the beach is protected by nature and hence cannot be built on, except for some local single houses.
Argóstoli
Argóstoli is the capital of the island Kefalonia. It offers rich cultural flairs and is definitely worth a visit. The port street is a very lively place with fruit markets or Kefania (name of traditional Greek coffee houses).
You can also visit the Archaeological Museum, go to the Philharmonic Hall or a theater. At the pedestrian area – the Lithostrotou Street – you will also find traditional shops to buy souvenirs or just to stroll through the city to enjoy the pleasant atmosphere.
Map of the cruise port in Kefalonia
Crusie ships will normally moor at the pier in Argóstoli, the captital city of the island. Because the pier is really close to the center, you can easily explore the city on foot. Shipping companies also often offer shuttle bus service as an alternative transport. With these, you will be taken directly from the cruise terminal to the city center.
Things to know about shore excursions in Kefalonia
Shipping companies and routes
Kefalonia is the biggest Ionian island and is called by shipping liners during their Eastern Mediterranean programs.
Cruise liners like MSC, NCL, Princess and Royal Caribbean call at port here.
Immigration and visa
Greece is a country in the Schengen area, this means that U.S. citizens can enter Greece without a visa for stays of up to 90 days for tourism purposes.
Depending on the chosen route, however, non-European ports may also be called during your cruise. If it is the case, it may be necessary to carry a valid passport. Please inform yourself in good time before departure at your shipping company or at the travel agency regarding the valid entry requirements.
Taxi and public transports
As we have mentioned above, the berths of cruise ships at the pier are close to the city center. This also makes exploring and reaching the city very easy and convenient on foot.
You can also take a taxi as an alternative. With taxis, you can discover the island on your own with a shore excursion to Argóstoli. However, we recommend you to ask for a specific price beforehand.
Currency
EURO is the national currency in Greece (1 dollar = 0.86 euro and 1 pound = 1.11 euro). You can also pay with credit cards but you should keep in mind that it could charge you fees.
Travel time
Although Kefalonia hasn‘t yet been overcrowded by tourists, the best time to travel is still in the Spring and Fall months. In fact, the climate is the most comfortable during this time. Temperatures can easily reach 40 °C/ 104 °F in summer months, making it too hot for visitors at this time of the year to stop for a shore excursion.
The rainy season starts from November and it is cooler, more pleasant on the island at this time. However, there isn’t any snow for the temperature normally would not drop below 10 °C/ 50 °F
