The most beautiful sights in Tallinn
Tallinn is the pride of Estonia and is entitled one of the most beautiful capital cities in Europa. Here you find many famous sight-seeings, which all make a land excursion in Tallinn the highlight of many cruise trips in the Baltic Sea. We have sorted out some of the best ones below.
Old town of Tallinn
A visit to the historic old town should not be missed on your Tallinn land excursion. This UNESCO World Heritage site has many buildings and constructions worth seeing, such as the 700-year-old Town Hall, which also has an excellent observation deck with a view over the spectacular landscape of the city and the port of Tallinn
The well-preserved city walls, which made Tallinn one of the best fortified cities in the Middle Ages, are also what you should see when you are in Old Town Tallinn.
Alexander Newsky Cathedral
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox church located on the Cathedral Hill (Toompea). The beautifully decorated church was completed in 1900 and is very well preserved. Before the church services you should not miss the chimes of the eleven bells.
Rocca al Mare
Visit the Estonian open-air museum Rocca al Mare your Tallinn’s land excursion. Opened in 1964, the museum covers an area of 208 arces. Especially, typical Estonian buildings such as farmhouses, windmills or fishermen’s lodgings will be presented. Many of the houses are original and date back to the 18th century. It is highly recommended to take part in the regular guided tours. The entrance fees are 8 EUR for adults, children are free.
West Coast of Estonia
Although Tallinn has so much to offer, a shore excursion to the west coast of Estonia is also worthwhile. Only a few kilometers outside of Tallinn, you will literally escape the urban life madness to enter and enjoy the wilderness.
Explore the beautiful waterfalls, the sandy steep cliffs and long-abandoned monasteries and military facilities from the Russian Imperial era.
Maps of the cruise terminals in Tallinn
The port of Tallinn is one of the largest ports in the Baltic Sea. The cruise ships dock at one of three terminals in the Old City Harbor.
The harbor is, as its name says, not far from the historic old town. Hence, it is quite easy to go on foot there from the port (about 1 km/0.6 miles). Alternatively, both buses and taxis can be found near the terminals.
Things to know before your excursions in Tallinn
Shipping companies and routes
Tallinn is one of the most popular cruise ports in the Baltic Sea. There is hardly any large cruise line that doesn’t offer Baltic Sea cruises to the Estonian capital.
Cruise lines like Costa, Royal Caribbean, Princess, NCL, Celebrity also offer cruise trips in the Baltic sea that have their stop at the coast of Tallinn every summer.
Immigration and visa
US citizens don’t need to apply for a tourist visa to enter the Schengen countries in Europe when the visit is under 90 days. However, shipping companies may ask for your passports in order to fulfill the entry requirements. It is therefore advisable to check the valid entry requirements for the booked cruise route before departure.
Taxi and other public transports
Like in any other ports, there are always Sightseeing Buses for visitors to travel easily and conveniently during their land excursions in Tallinn. If you only want to visit the Old town, you can take the Bus line 2 in direction Airport.
Taxi is also an option, just remember to pay attention to switching on the taximeter.
Travel time
Estonia’s climate is shaped by the northern location of the country. The summer is short and the winter is often very cold. You can expect a high rainfall in the form of snow here.
For this reason, it is recommended to travel to Estonia in late spring to September. Especially in June, July and August, you can have a nice summer and even expect temperatures around 30 degrees (86F). Also, the evening hours during this time are relatively mild and bright thanks to the very long daytime.
